Hey everyone, I just got these orchids from Amazon and am going to grow them without any media hopefully as I always end up with root rot otherwise. These are the names they provided: Tolumnia Jairak Flyer 'Ladybug', Vanda Apec Blue, Rhynchostylis Gigantea Cartoon, Oncidium Arthurara Sea Snake 'Unforgettable', Cattleya Ric. Atardecer Palmoreno Thongsuk Delight, Denobdrium Burana Jade x Emaron Gold. I was just hoping if anyone has any specific care recommendations for any of the plants :)

These are all very different types of orchid with very different care needs. Vandas are very typically grown without media, hanging in baskets etc, bare-rooted. Rhynchostylis, Cattleyas, and Dendrobiums generally do well in chunky bark or bark/sphagnum mixes. Oncidiums and Talumnias, however, need a much finer media to maintain their moisture needs. I’ve really never seen most of these grown without any media. You really shouldn’t have to worry about root rot if you pot in a clear plastic VERY ventilated orchid pot and don’t over water. With so many different types, you’ll have to do a little more research as to how frequently that might be for each.

Okay, I will have to buy some pots then. The instructions that came with the package said not the plant both the vandas and talumnias in media, should I plant the latter anyways?

I don’t have a ton of first hand talumnia experience- I hope another member who does is able to give you more info. In the meantime- search for Miss Orchid Girl on YouTube. She is an EXCELLENT resource on almost every type of orchid with decades of experience. Whole playlists on most of the ones you’ve purchased. She has tried many growing techniques over the years, and has lots of common sense advice. Keep us posted, I’d love to hear how they are doing!

Tolumnias like their wet dry cycle. Some people go without media. I personally don’t have the time for that. Mine are in a chunky media in heavily ventilated pots. I know that is counter intuitive - thin roots tiny bark - but Tolumnias want to dry out quickly. Once the media is dry, it’s watering time. As Jen said above, Miss Orchid Girl has extensive information on most types of orchids, including Tolumnias.
