The bottom leaves are getting squishy! Does it need water or is this normal??

    You should water if the top leaf isn’t turgid, which I only recently learned means “really plump.” Give it a little squeeze. If you watered yesterday, do not water it today. Consecutive days of watering is a good way to kill them.

      I have a few of these - all shapes and sizes. I have them all catalogued in Planta, but I have almost abandoned the watering schedule in favor of the pinch method ha.

      So if the leaves are squishy, then o need to water? Is that correct? Regardless of whether it’s the top or the bottom leaves, right??

      Dang it I missed this question. Only if the top leaves are soft.

    I thought it was bad to water if they are splitting. Is this splitting? Asking because I just bought my first lithops!

      Unless the new leaf pair is soft or wrinkled from lack of water, generally, it will pull enough water from the old leaves. Too much water causes stacking as the old leaves can’t dry out, and you end up with a lot of leaf pairs stacked on each other

      This isn’t a lithops, this is a different split rock plant. They grow more leaves than lithops, and you definitely shouldn’t water lithops while they’re splitting

    It’s a split stone plant, slightly different from lithops. These generally are okay with having 2 pairs of leaves, and I find they tend to be more forgiving with not having a long rest period without water, which lithops need. If you watered yesterday, definitely do not water again today

      Yes to all of the above! These are different from Lithops, so their care is also different. Its normal and healthy for them to have multiple sets of leaves. I use the squeeze test as above posters have said, mine also seems to close a bit when its thirsty. If you just watered yesterday do not water again today.
