My lithops is splitting, I think she’s a bit late to this party, but I’m very excited about it! 🎉 I have had a really hard time finding information on this plant online. Any information I find is pretty much invalidated in the next source. So, if anyone knows any of the following I would be very grateful! - about how long do they take to split? At what point should I be worried she is stuck? - after she is finished splitting and the old leaves are all shriveled; should I water her right away or wait till she wrinkles? - how long does the dead flower stick around? Should I try to get it off? - I have found several references to not watering when the plant is splitting or dormant. How am I to tell when it’s dormant? - some places say not to water when flowering and others say to water as normal. Should I withhold water when/if she flowers?

    I’m not a complete expert on lithops as I’ve only had mine for a couple months, but I have done some research on them and I think I can answer your questions. 1. Lithops take a couple weeks to a couple months to finish splitting. 2. Generally, after splitting they will need water, but a sure way to tell is if they’re soft and wrinkly on the sides. 3. The dead flower may stick around for a while, and you can try to pull it off, but if it doesn’t come off easily, just leave it alone. 4. Dormancy is generally when the plant is about to split, and you can tell because the leaves start withering. 5. From what I’ve heard online, they shouldn’t be watered while blooming. Hope this helps!

      Thank you! That’s way more helpful than what I’ve been able to find. Which generally boils down to: This is a plant It likes the sun It might possibly need water between right now and the heat death of the universe. 🤣

    I have tried and not tried just about every watering technique with these, but generally just follow watering alerts and give the top leaf a little squeeze before giving any. Hard top leaf means I’m going to skip my watering. Some take weeks to push out a bloom (it is the slowest birth), some take MONTHS to split. The more I get, the less I really know. That’s terrible advice, I know. Us indoor growers get caught up in keeping them lovely, but, it’s okay for them to look like 💩 for most of the year. (I don’t clip their stems.)

      Thank you for the answers, I think I was just confusing myself with all the conflicting information. I think your method of just look at the plant and follow your gut is the best idea. She finally split, and had twins! But she did look really rough for a while. I have watered her but skipped the last time because, as you mentioned, the little “butts” still felt firm. What do you mean by their stems?

      Oh, the stems when they bloom. They stick around forever, and some have mentioned that they clip that off to give the plant more strength when it’s splitting. So much conflicting info. I had a bug catastrophe pop in and turn my Lithops life upside down, as well. But…they’re so cool.

      Oh, that makes sense. She has a dead flower when I got her and it stuck around forever! Eeep bugs, I hope they have all been banished from your home/plants.

      lol I saw this in a Facebook comment. The problem is that my plants have all been on their own schedule. So following Spring advice when they’re acting/looking Winter is a big “huh.”
