I have two African Violets. Is there a rule that says I have to repot them when they get bigger? The smaller one seems needy - weekly feeding. Thinking of putting it in a self-watering pot like the bigger one.

    Hi! I’m not sure how much you know about the species so I’m just going to try and give as much info as I can! 😊 I would definitely recommend repotting. African Violets like being repotted more often than other species, but they rarely require size upgrades so I’d keep at around the same size you’re at right now or go slightly smaller. If your plant is in a pot 3 inches or smaller then I’d repot it every 3-5 months. If the pot is 4 inches or bigger then you can wait 6-12 months. I’m not sure if you’re already using it, but I HIGHLY recommend using African Violets Soil. Mine wasn’t doing great when I bought it but immediately look ten times better in the new soil. Also, African Violets don’t like it when you pack in soil, so just make sure it’s fairly aerated. The pot doesn’t need to be deep or wide. They’ll grow much better in pots that are a bit smaller than they are. In the wild they tend to grow in the cracks of limestone or they’ll grow epiphytically. They will actually bloom better this way. You can remove any faded blooms and old leaves, then you can do a slight trim on roots with the proper tools to promote new growth and will give them a refresh. (Just some extra information in case you want it!) - Overwatering tends to be the biggest cause of death within the violets so just make sure you’re careful with the self watering pots. - They love bright/indirect light. Mine gets hit directly for maybe 45 minutes a day though and loves it. But too much will scorch their leaves. - They don’t love water in their leaves, it can cause spotting. - Make sure to remove dying leaves and blooms as soon as you can, the plant will really appreciate it - I love using a fertilizer specifically for African Violets, it’s works amazingly. But it smells horrible - Rotating it occasionally can help with even growth! I know you only asked about the repotting but I thought this might be helpful! Even if there’s only one thing on here you didn’t know at least you know it now! I hope this helps! ❤️ Your plants look amazing!

      Wow! Thank you. Your information was so very helpful. I am glad you mentioned the soil as I did replant the larger African Violet in special soil and bagged her for a week. She has been doing well ever since. Also, it’s good to know, they prefer tighter pots.
