hi! i am new to all things plants and i am trying to learn. i recently bought a golden pothos and the vines are so long and pretty but i want it to be fuller at the top so i want to propagate some cuttings to replant when i repot it. does anyone have good prop drop recommendations from amazon? or anything that would help or ensure that it grows properly. any help would be great, thank you <333

In my experience, all you need is water, but I want to try air layering with my pothos as a propagation method

I have a philo micans I just cut the king stem into shorter sections that had aerial roots and set them on top of the soil. It didn’t take too long for them to root. Water propagating is my go to also. I sometimes using rooting hormone but usually forget

When propagating you always want to look for a node, that is where the roots come out

Here is picture of pothos I am propagating, the nodes are the bumps

The node has to be in the water for it to grow properly

The owner of my local plant shop told me once that Pothos produce a substance when they are cut that mimics prop drops or rooting hormone. I never use any type of rooting hormone when I propagate Pothos and actually cut Pothos leaves and add them to other propagations. You should be good without!

I think with such an obliging plant like a Pothos, you can skip the hormones. I disagree that you have to propagate in water first, but it may make you feel better to see the roots before you plant it. I personally just make sure a leaf node or two are under the soil, and I’ve even just laid them on top of the soil making sure a leaf node is face down, then secure with a paperclip so it doesn’t get jostled.

You don’t HAVE to prop in water, but you get a good strong root system if you do. Golden Pathos produce a strong rooting hormone themselves, so if you are propping something else, put it in the same water with some that has rooted. The other prop will probably root better.
