Need help propagating and repotting ZZ plant! I’m new to the plant life. I inherited a ZZ plant that has been doing well outside in a shady area. I decided I wanted to propagate it for a house plant by dividing it. I also realized that the roots were growing out of the drainage holes of the pot so decided it was time for some maintenance! I am new to repotting - my only previous experience was with a pothos and slowly it died after I repotted, so I’m looking for some help and confidence tips here! I pulled the whole ZZ plant out of the pot and it looked over crowded and root bound (see first photo). Going off of a YouTube video I massaged the roots to separate them and get them detached from the soil. I then divided the plant by trying to separate the rhizomes by just pulling the plant apart. I divided them into 3 plants and planted the mother back in the same pot. I put all 3 pots in the same spot where the original plant was and watered them with a root starter/fertilizer (hopefully that was good?) Here are my questions: -in the process of trying to untangle the roots and get the soil off them, I definitely broke some of the roots. Is this something to be concerned about or do plants generally survive this? -If you are repotting a plant using the same pot, should you trim the roots if they are long? (General question for all plants.) Since I divided this specific plant, should I trim the roots if the new plants separated from the mother are being put in smaller pots? -When I separated the rhizomes, I ended up with a section where there are several rhizomes but only one stem with leaves (see second photo). I planted this in a smaller pot. Will this grow and survive? -In the process of trying to massage the roots and clear the soil after getting the plant out of the pot, I ended up with this solo small rhizome with roots on it but no stems/leaves, is there a way to grow this? Or should I toss it in the compost? (See third photo.) -Is if ever okay to reuse soil, or mixing the old soil with new when repotting if the plant was healthy? (General question for all plants.) Any help is appreciated, I’m totally new to repotting (and as I mentioned was unsuccessful the first time) and also new to trying to propagate plants!

It's good to leave as many roots as you can however it doesn't really hurt the plant to trim some off if they're too long. Roots are going to break off during repotting. Unless you break off an excessive amount it will be fine. The little leaf with a big clump of rhizome should be okay. It's hard to say there are other variables. Probably all of the roots are not attached to that shoot so some of them may die. Regarding the last photo, if there isn't an eye there will be no growth so you might as well pitch it.

Trimming the roots is kind of personal preference and depends on what size pot you have available, the health of the plant/roots, and if you want to loosen an overly root bound root ball which will encourage new growth. Trimming too much could shock a plant. Yes, it’s okay to reuse soil. Personally, I wouldn’t reuse soil in the case where a plant had root rot/fungus/pests or there was severe mold. Congrats on what sounds like a successful repot! The plant looks good.
