Wanted to keep a lil thread open for anyone interested in propagating jades. Feel free to share your tips below, and if anyone’s working on propagating their own jade and wants to ask any questions, I’d be happy to answer, but I thought it’d be a good idea to show my process on propagating my 30-year-old jade plant, Aslan. Currently, I’m giving the cuttings time to callous, and cut them all with some shears I sanitized with some hydrogen peroxide. I’ll be using colored glass bottles to try to emulate the natural way roots grow with less light exposure than they usually experience with clear bottles. This’ll be in hopes of allowing the cuttings to develop stronger roots like they would if naturally grown in soil, where they just don’t get that much direct light. I’ll post little updates throughout the weeks for anyone interested.

I did 😬 first time propagating with so much bark on the stems, but I gently shaved a bit of it off at the calloused ends in hopes it allows more roots to form on the sides of the stem rather than just the bottom

the leaves will grow right out of the woody stems 100% — good for you taking the plunge! it’s always nerve wracking but you’ll be way more confident pruning jade moving forward. this jade grew from an entirely bare woody stem (from the leaves all being BURNED off lololol)

Omg! BURNED?! That’s awful! It looks great! Thank you, though. And that’s good to hear about the woody stems. I’m trying to propagate everything I clipped off, so the two main stalks are the new ground for me here.

yup! i put it outside in a sink or swim moment — all the leaves were sun scorched black and shiny, they fell off, and she started over as long as you don’t overwater, its VERY hard to kill a jade. you’ve got this!

Here’s my journey with a 13 year old clipping from a random house I used to pass, with a mahoosive jade in their porch. I couldn’t resist knocking and asking if I could have a little piece. Thankfully the owner was actually chuffed that I held her beloved jade in such high regard. This is the original cutting, which was probably no bigger than a couple of inches who I terribly neglected for many years but as you will see she’s been very forgiving to me 😍

The first few leaves that fell when I repotted her last year.

And a couple of branches that “fell” on the repot…

And this last baby that I had to rescue a few weeks back after a rather too vigorous watering lol 😝🤷🏻‍♀️

the colored glass bottles are actually a really good idea! i hadn’t thought about clear bottles giving too much light and causing weaker roots

I saw a couple of videos and articles suggesting it, so I’m gonna experiment with it: one stalk is in clear glass and the other is in colored glass. I’ll let y’all know if one turns out more developed than the other
