Hi all, so I'm trying to save a wandering Jew plant from months of neglecting watering and fertilizing. I so far have its healthy stems (cut at a 45° angle) in water with Osmocote Plus plant food. What else can I do to give it a fighting chance?

Hi there, these grow well without the additional fertiliser in just water. They just need time. I would remove the fertiliser granules :) If those granules are not specific to hydroponics, they may cause more harm than good imo. They are formulated to be slow release and to interact with the other microbes and fungi etc found in soil in order to make the fertiliser bioavailable to the plant roots. It works differently in hydroponics because you don’t have all the bugs and fungi and microbes in there doing all that work. Some people like to use soil based fertilisers for water starters but I when doing so you want to be using an extremely reduced or diluted amount, so like 1 of these balls. But like I said, you don’t need them at all :) If you would like to add nutrients to the water, you can find nutrients that are specifically formulated for hydroponic growing. I use Growth Technology Clonex Clone Solution (CSS) for cuttings if they’re going to be in there for a while because they’re slow to develop roots. Or just plain water for fast rooting plants like your tradescantia :) Hope that helps and best of luck with your babies! 🌿🌿🌿

You only do it when the plant is healthy. It will not help on propagation. Just like what Bb said, it will only do more harm. Once the plant is established ie standing on her own, then you can start fertilizing on growing season to boost their growth. Other than that? Let her recover on her own by giving it new root growth.

いいね 1件So just for clarifying sake would the salt like fertilizer that dissolves in water cause damage as well while propagating?
