Hi everyone. This is my first time attempting to propagate my Monstera and I think something has already gone wrong. I watched a YouTube video on where to cut the stem, below the node, but now after a few hours the part that’s been cut has turned brown and the water is discoloured. I read that this could mean I didn’t cut it far enough from the node, any advice? The node in the photo was there when I cut it BTW.

That is close, but I've seen closer. I would dry it off with a paper towel, and leave it out of the water for a few hours to callus. And then pop it back in clean water. And replace the water 1x a week.

I couldn’t go any further because I didn’t want to damage the other growth. I will try your suggestion, thank you very much.

It can be really hard to do on certain species.

Did you let the cut part dry and callus overnight before you put it in water?

I did that last night and put it in this morning after it was suggested. The YouTube video didn’t say anything about that unfortunately.

I have read that if you put a little bit of cinnamon on the cut spot on the parent plant it will help prevent rot from developing. I wonder if anyone has tried sprinkling a bit of cinnamon in the water inhibit any kind of rot developing in the water?

I fully agree with letting it dry to get a callous. I recommend rinsing the container with a peroxide solution to kill bacteria. Also, get a larger/wider container like a recycled spaghetti jar to provide room for the roots. Monstera roots are thick and can grow long. Longer roots have a better chance of living when transferred to soil. Fertilizer with 50% diluted liquid fertilizer. I add SuperThrive plant vitamins to help. 🍀🪴

This used to happen to me with my wet sticks, I learnt a nifty trick, it's worked for me if I'm inpatient and don't wait for it to callous over - I dip each snipped end in wax from a tea light candle to prevent rotting, I also have friends who put a bit of super glue on the end, never had any issues with it 😁 my ADHD brain forgets about my cutting when I let them callous, so started the wax method and has worked a treat so far 😁💚
