I have a pothos i would like to take some cuttings from and propagate them. My question is.... is it better to root them in water..... or in the soil with root powder?

    I’ve never tried putting back into soil, water has always worked well for me but it wouldn’t hurt to try both and see which roots faster and which you prefer!

    You can root pothos in either water or soil, so you really can’t go wrong. I usually lean toward perlite / soil because the roots come in a bit stronger and the move to a pot is less stressful for the plant, but water works perfectly fine too. If you go with soil, keep it lightly moist; if you use water, just refresh it every few days.

    I’ve tried water and that works well, and just yesterday I put one directly into soil , so we will see how it does🤷🏼‍♀️

    I’ve always gone the water route and have been able to generate several new plants using this method!

    Thank you everyone for the suggestion. I had several cuttings and decided to put half in water and half in soil.

  6. The Rooted Pothos

    I have great success with pothos propagation! Root in water for several weeks (this works best in the summer or warmer climates). Then before transferring to soil in a pot, I add soil slowly over a couple weeks to the water and THEN pot it up. This helps it acclimate to the PH of the dirt without going into shock. Mine vine so fast when I do it this way. If I just stick them straight in dirt after rooting, they don’t grow much.
