Hey friends. I’m a novice propagator and I usually prop in water and move all my props to a generic houseplant soil mix… I’m looking to get a bit more specific with what each plant prefers soil-wise, but I confess it’s a bit overwhelming and I don’t really know where to start without buying like 25 different mediums to mix and I don’t have the storage space for that. Any guidance and tips would be greatly appreciated! TIA 💚

I also personally don’t love mixing a ton of different things either. I think a lot of the advice depends on what kinds of plants you have! I have mostly monsteras and then a bunch of other assorted aroids with some succulents and other genus in the mix. I’ve been quite happy with using Molly’s Aroid Mix for a while now, and I keep plain orchid bark, coco coir, and peat-free organic soil mix on hand to make it more or less chunky if I need to. I’ve been very happy using Bonsai Jack’s Gritty Succulent & Cactus Soil with no changes for all of my succulents. I also think part of it depends on your personal preferences and how you see your plants reacting to their soil. If you’re prone to over watering or under watering, or how humid/dry your environment is, etc. I’m more likely to over water so everything is in a chunkier soil than is probably recommended but it’s working great for everyone because that’s what works for me.

Ok I took a look at your plants and here’s what I recommend, using just 3 ingredients that are easy to find. • Geoppertias - 1/4 perlite, 1/4 orchid bark, 1/2 potting soil • Pothos - 1/3 orchid bark, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 potting mix • Croton - 1/4 perlite, 1/4 orchid bark, 1/2 potting mix • Dracaenas - 1/2 potting soil, 1/4 perlite, 1/4 orchid bark • Monsteras - 1/3 orchid bark, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 potting soil It doesn’t have to be exact. I don’t measure it or anything, just eyeball it :)

I have many different variety of plants, and I use the same soil for all. This includes my new props. I use Coast of Maine Houseplant mix. I ADORE it. All my plants are thriving and I probably won’t ever change away from it. I have succulents, tropicals, easy care (like spider plants) in it. The only things I don’t have planted with it is cactus. Best soil ever IMO, and at my local nursery, a bag is less than $10.
