I feel slightly dumb. I have had 4 pothos bunches in water for years now, with no growth. I even had them in my fish tank for a while to see if that helps. Can they not grow big and beautiful in water? Do I have to move them to soil?

Are you sure there are nodes for it to grow roots? Maybe a pic of the cuttings will help.

they need to have a node bump (the brown bit coming out of the stem) in order to produce more growth, and the water should be refreshed regularly to ensure that they have enough oxygen. they’re generally said to be good as fish tank plants, i’ve seen a lot of aquariums with thriving pothos but no personal experience. a pic of what you’re working with could help!

I regularly start my pothos in water and have very few issues, the oldest in this bunch were cuttings from november so it’s been about three months of growth

All of your propagations have plenty of nodes. It may be a case of not enough nutrients. Also when they are in soil you can cut them back and cause branching which makes the plant big and full. In water this is harder and typically they just get longer and longer. If you like them in the water I would put a drop of liquid organic fertilizer. Otherwise move them into soil and after a couple weeks of adapting trim them back so that they will thicken up.

They are quite tolerant of pruning. My son let his get crispy dry so I took it for a rescue cut it completely back to about 2 in on all stems and it came back beautifully.

One more thing, a fish tank would definitely provide some nutrients but in some cases the fish nibble at the roots so that may have kept it from getting too large. Tank water is great for watering though when you need to remove some to freshen the fish tank.

I shall try to repot them. I have NEVER had good luck with a pathos! Idk why I can have better luck with the harder plants then the easy ones. Lol like I personally can not for the life of me keep mint alive!! What the heck😆

Regular fertilizer, regular water changes and good lighting help them grow in water. Google hydroponic gardens if you want them to live full time in water and flourish.
