Hi everyone! I was recently given an albo monstera cutting which is now only putting out green leaves. A new leaf appears to have a white line on the stem but I’m tempted to cut back to where I have put the orange line in one of the photos. Can anyone help me understand variegation and if what I think I have learned is correct please?

Variegation is just a difference in the coloration of the leaves, it usually affects the amount of light a plant can handle. There is no need to chop it if it is pushing out new healthy green leaves and is not showing signs of streas. The white streak on the stem indicates that the next leaf it pushes out will have white variegation on it. So don’t chop just stay patient and wait for the new leaf to unfurl and show you all it’s variegated glory!

Thank you. 🙏🏼 I feel it looks like the variegation has disappeared from one side of the stem (where the green leaves are) I was thinking about waiting to see how this new leaf turns out as it seems to have a little white on it. It’s all a little confusing and hard to find a good guide online 😊

I would wait another leaf or two. I know it’s hard to be patient with albos 🥲 But you’re right about the white on the stem being a decent indicator of variegation potential. I’ve heard that it’s even more likely if the white stripe goes across the auxiliary bud that activates when the top of the plant is cut off. However, variegation can still pop up from green stems. My philosophy is that it’s pretty much never too late to cut a plant back, but it is possible to cut it too soon. Since your cutting is new, I’d give it more time to settle before experimenting. But yes, that does look like a good place to cut when you do

Thank you. I’ll let it grow a bit more and at least I know I have a back up plan if it has reverted 😊

You’re welcome! I’m glad you asked to make sure. It’s true online i fo can be shaky. I know this from hands on experience and 2 different greenhouses and in my own home so don’t stress it. You’ll learn and grow with the plant
