Hello! I have a monstera albo cutting on the way and I have always water propagated. However, i want to give my Al o the strongest roots possible and keep it the most healthy, as well as the node while it grows. Would it be best to start in water, and as a root begins to form, transfer it to sphagnum moss? Or should i be brave and just start w straight sphagnum? Any tips and tricks would be wonderful.

I think it depends on what you’re most comfortable doing. Personally I have had more success getting a cutting to grow not just main roots but the smaller feeder roots doing the water prop route vs. sphagnum moss. While sphag moss does work it just takes a lil longer and you run the risk of gnats (that happened to me 🫣🥴)

Ah thank you! I’ve left all my cuttings in water apart from a few pothos and philodendrons since they reproduce so much quicker, but I’m terrified to transfer from water to soil with the monstera 🤦🏻‍♀️ but knowing you’ve had more success makes me feel confident in its transfer. Thank you!

Tbh it’s those smaller feeder roots that come off the main roots are the key to making sure it survives the shock when you’re ready to transfer it to soil, it’ll definitely react to the change in environment no matter what but having a good root system will make a big difference in how the plant is impacted :) I wish you the best of luck! You’ll definitely have to update the group down the road on its success!

Monsteras are very adaptable. Going from water to soil is not an issue with sufficient roots. Let the roots get over 3 inches before transplanting. I avoid sphagnum moss because I tend to overwater using it. Others are more adept with it. I use standard potting mix with lots of perlite or a commercial alocasia potting mix. I fertilize when the roots start to show. 🪴🍀

Thank you! Do you fertilize the water? I’ve never added fertilizer to the water

Yes, I add diluted liquid blue Miracle Gro to the water with SuperThrive plant vitamins.
