Hi everyone! I'm gonna need a bit of advice here, to make sure this jade plant cutting i took home today stays happy and healthy:) I have two parts of a stem: one long stick with roots but no leaves (one lil pup at the base, too), and a rootless portion of a stem with a bunch of large leaves on it. What would be the best way to propagate it? I was thinking of trying all four ways, (1) planting the already rooted part of the stem into soil, (2) cutting the upper portion up and planting the nodes in the ground too. (3) Also planting the rootless part, and (4) also plucking off individual leaves and propping those too. Let me know what method works best! And thank you so much:)🪴🧡🌿

    Personally, since you have long stems on both for more roots to grow from, I wouldn’t chop it up. Especially since your pieces look to be from an older jade, you’ll have better luck with branches that already have leaves, and from my experience with propagating them, trying to propagate long stems that never had leaves doesn’t tend to produce any roots or usable propagations. I’d dip both cuttings in Bonide’s Rooting Powder, then transfer it to a fresh cactus mix, bottom-water it, and let the soil dry out completely between waterings, then wait 20-30 days before taking them out of the soil to look for root development. The rooting powder will help both plants grow new roots faster, as well as help with lowering the risk of transplant shock from repotting them. Placing them both in soil rather than propagating in water and hoping they can adapt to being moved to soil once they grow roots also increases the likelihood of your propagations surviving in the long run.       Sorry; to clarify, you’ll probably have better luck with the piece that doesn’t have any roots than the one that doesn’t have leaves but has roots. You can try the rooting powder and placing them in soil, but I’ve found that leggy branch pieces that didn’t have leaves in the first place don’t tend to produce new leaves a lot of the time. If you still want to try it with the piece that has roots, I’d cut the stalk down to where there’s about two or three nodes (the nodes are where the lines or notches on the stem are), cutting between those lines when you make the cut. New roots or leaves will grow from there.

      Oh! Thank you for the clarification on the leafless stem too!🧡 So, you suggest I cut that one up into 2-3 node long pieces and try to propagate those? Would I have better luck just sticking them in the soil?

    Thank you so much for the reply!🧡🧡 So, I shouldn't chop up either of the cuttings and just put them in soil, but the one with the leaves has a higher chance of surviving?

      Correct. What I meant with cutting the one with roots is that you can keep it as is, but if you still wanna see if it wants to try forming new roots or leaves, I’d cut it down to the spot where I marked in between the nodes. Pot both up the same way, but in different pots.
