Made the chop to stop rot getting any further up the plants stem now planning on repotting and just looking for any advise as I only usually propagate from indervidual leaves. Should I do water only first for this type of cutting? How far should I pot into soil if I do direct into soil? Backstory: Trying to resuscitate a mature jadeplant for my mum it was healthy at the beginning of this year very full leaves then when she moved house it was deteriorating. She's never used a drainage pot so im pretty sure the soil got water logged post drying out in the house move and started rotting from the root up. Its also had a history of gnats so could have been todo with that also.

    Hey, there. Recently had to go through this with my jade. From a look at the collapsed stem, it looks like it got soft rot at some point, which likely occurred during the overwatering and rot process. Mine contracted it after I took it to a nursery to get it repotted, and ended up having to cut the remaining stems and propagating it to save what remained of it. For the branch, let the bottom of it callous over (I would imagine it has by now, given the date I’m answering here), then use a glass bottle or similar container and fill it with room temp water. Just to be safe that the rot doesn’t spread and there isn’t any lingering bacteria, you can add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to the water. Simply fill it up so the bottom of the branch is touching the water, not that it’s submerging the entire branch. Another option would be to cut it between the nodes (the marks on the branch), as that’s where the roots will grow, and cut the branch in half, then propagate them both in water. Allow them to callous before placing them in water after this step. Here’s a photo of my setup, and I’m happy to report that the larger branches and my other stem cuttings have successfully propagated after doing this, even after what happened with the mother plant.       As for the stem cuttings with remaining leaves, I put them in wet perlite for a couple of weeks, only adding water to the perlite when it dried out, and checking on the root development every three days. All of them started forming roots very quickly, but the key with this is to monitor it, and take them out and plant them in soil once they start developing enough roots, as jades can quickly rot if they’re left unsupervised in wet perlite for weeks on end. Mine took about 2 1/2 weeks to grow enough roots to be planted, so it’s a considerably faster process than water propagation.

      This is another set of stem cuttings I took from the jade that sadly developed the rot. They successfully rooted, and their leaves will be soft at first until their roots acclimate to taking nutrients from soil instead of water or perlite, so they might remain soft for a few weeks (mine took a month for the leaves to bounce back, but all the cuttings remained intact. None of the leaves were lost). Hope you can save this jade for your mother. Good luck!
