I have this beautiful Callisia Repens and she has been growing nonstop since I got her, filling out the pot I put her in. She has shoots that fall over the side of the pot and I want to clean her up a bit to stimulate new growth, and id love to have two of her. Only I’m not sure how to propagate her properly. I have tried cutting shoots and placing them in water for a while but I didn’t see much happening with roots or anything. Any advice is greatly appreciated 🫶🏻

I've never propagated one of these, but I imagine it's similar to any similar vine plant. As long as you have a nice cutting with a few nodes and a couple leaves at the top, it should grow roots in the water. How long did you wait for the roots? Sometimes they can take a while. Be sure to change the water, too. If that doesn't work, when repotted, you may be able to separate a few of the vines and pot separately. Be sure to prune before that and let the vines branch out so it's extra full. That will allow it to not look like either plant is missing something.

Try propagating in different ways: sphagnum moss, water, Leca, perlite, chunky mix soil, …among others. I’ve had success with burgundy Tradescantia Jose Puig which is a small leaf fleshy vine similar to your plant. I put cuttings in a ziplock plastic bag with 2 tablespoons water with and without moss at the bottom. See the photo showing the fine root growth after 1 month. Thread like roots. It’s time to fertilize when the roots grow out. I will add it back to the pot. I put cuttings of Hoya Tengchongensis and Hoya Heuschkeliana variegata in a bag together last summer with moss. Very thin roots. Lots of growth on both sets of cuttings. 🪴🍀

I open the bags 2-3 times a month to give them fresh air, clean out rot (usually the moss) and mist if needed.

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely try that.

I always just stick mine in soil in the sun. Keep the soil a little damp for about a week, then follow your normal watering schedule. The roots are very small and threadlike for a while, so just give it some time!

Thanks! I think I’ll try a few different methods at once. If I have three different things going one of them has to work!
