My current prop tray. 😍 I had fun.😄 I had a migraine the other day and this was soothing.❤️ Currently have Anacampseros Sunrise Verigata, Perle Von Nurnburg, Donkey’s Tail, Ghost Plant, Grapetoveria Bashful, Grapetopetalum Bella, and some leaves from the last of my great grandmother’s sempervivum. The last ones probably won’t propagate, because I’ve heard it’s something like 1 in 100 for sempervivum to propagate from leaves. But, a freak accident took us down to one last rosette (it’s doing great!) so I’ve tried to propagate every leaf I’ve ever pulled off just incase.🤞 I should be near 100 at this point so maybe I’ll get a pup soon? The last plant will hopefully put out pups this year so it won’t matter.😅 And disclaimer, no plants were harmed in the making of this prop tray. 🤣 These are leaves removed in the up potting of the plants to make room for deeper roots. Or they just got knocked off by accident when handling a plant. There are no naked plants running around with no leaves I promise .😄

    Beautiful! Any tips for propagating donkey’s tail/burro’s tail?

      I just lay the leaves in this tray of succulent soil and mist the soil daily. You don’t want the dirt to stay wet too long so the leaves don’t rot, but the success rate is higher if there is moisture every so often. It tells the roots it’s safe to grow, there is moisture around. I’ve heard people say, succulents will grow if you just throw a leaf on the ground and ignore it, this is true! The success rate will just be lower. I’ve heard, place them on a tray of dirt and never provide moisture because the mama leaf will feed the plant. This is also true, but again the success rate will be lower. This set up is easy for me and has provided me with the highest success rate. By misting, it encourages the leaf to make roots, by continuing to provide water even if the mama leaf isn’t dead yet, it allows it to have the support of the mama leaf longer. So when you forget to water the baby plant, it can drink from that leaf. Or if it has transplant shock as a baby when you pot it up or wants to have a growth spurt, it can drink from that leaf. It will dry up and fall off eventually, but doesn’t hurt anything being there. All that applies to succulents in general, burro’s tail tends to use up the leaf faster since it’s smaller so not much of an issue. Actually it’s more of a reason to provide some moisture to burro’s tail leaf propagations because they will use up the leaf faster. So if they don’t have roots and a pup by then, it will just die. I will take a picture of the burro’s tail babies I already grew from leaf propagations later so you can see what it will look like. Here’s an example of a baby plant with the leaf attached for a visual of what I meant.

    Is that just the angle or do you have the tips barely in the soil? I’m trying my first round! The middle was a piece I found lol no clue what it is or it’ll take again

      Great question! For succulents, you just lay the leaf on the soil flat. Don’t bury the whole leaf or even put the tip in the dirt. The pup and root come out of the same hole. Pup goes up and root goes down. If you have a stem or mini plant cutting like the one in the center of your picture, you do put the end in the dirt like you are planting it. It’s already serving as the pup. Those leaves might get a little wrinkly while it’s growing roots. It can’t take up water at that point and is using the stored energy in its leaves to grow roots. The misting of the dirt isn’t to water anything, just to provide some moisture to draw out roots. The leaf or cutting will go dormant if it doesn’t sense any moisture because it doesn’t want to waste its limited stored resources to grow roots until the time is right. Once it senses moisture, it knows it’s safe to send out roots and they will start growing. If you stop misting, the baby roots will dry out and the cutting or leaf will die so it’s important to continue misting whenever the dirt is dry to continue providing moisture for the roots to seek out. When it is big enough to transplant, you move onto regular watering. You transplant it with the mother leaf still attached, if it hasn’t shriveled up yet. It will continue giving it a boost, whenever it needs it, until the mother leaf is totally depleted.

      The ones I have standing on the side are different because I don’t really expect them to work.😅 Sempervivum is really hard to propagate from a leaf so I wouldn’t try if it wasn’t from a family heirloom plant. It went through a freak accident a year and a half ago that took us down to one rosette. That rosette is fine, but hasn’t produced pups yet, so I am putting every leaf that gets removed in the tray just incase it does work. 😅 I’ve heard the odds are 1 in 100, and I should be pretty close to 100 so…🤞🤪😄. I will move them down flat as I have room in the tray.
