I have a ponytail palm that is really special to me. It got infected with black fungus knots this winter and although we thought it survived eventually it all pretty much died. I have replanted it and a ceramic pot, and I took out some of the roots because it was pretty root bound in that pot. I don’t know if it’s gonna grow like this, but if anyone hasany advice , please share!

Upload pictures. It’s hard to comment without seeing its current condition.

That’s probably rot from the roots sitting in too much water. That may not not make it. The decay will attract pests. The pot is very big compared to the small diameter of the lower trunk. The soil is holding a lot more water than the tree can use. So, the roots sit in water too long. The new pot should be 1 inch to 2 inches wider than the root ball. My ponytail palm is shown. I keep a water sensor pen that turns blue when the soil is moist. I don’t water a lot since ponytail palms store water in their trunks. 🍀🪴

Is there anything I could possibly do to regenerate? Like cut off the top?

I’m not sure. The one in the picture is the only spider plant I have owned. I never propagated one. I would immediately take it out of the wet soil and remove all rotted roots. Rinse all of it with hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria. Place in a much smaller pot with dry soil. Let it dry a couple of days before watering again. Maybe that can kickstart it into producing a new branch. You might try cutting (sawing) the top just below the dry branches if you see no new growth in the dry branches. This will allow you to see the inner core of the trunk. A darker decaying inner core is a sign it will have a hard time trying to recover. You can seal the cut portion with a tree pruning sealer paint used to protect fresh cut areas from bacteria and insects if there is a small chance the inner core looks good. There is a sealant painted on the old cut. These are things I would try. Check google for propagation methods. Good luck.🍀 🪴

Ok thank you! I actually already did take it out. Let it dry out for a few days and pruned the roots. It was pretty root bound, but the roots weren’t decayed before the pruning. The picture shown is after repotting First sight don’t have to be anxious anymore. I did not know that it needs a smaller pot diameter so I will switch that out as you have suggested.
