I propagated a “wandering dude” plant about two weeks ago straight into soil… it looks like it’s doing okay, but should I repot it and make sure the roots have formed and/or are doing okay? This is my first time propagating anything so sorry if this is a silly question!

Did your plant have roots before planting? If not, the plant can be propagated in some water to form its roots. Once the roots are nice and strong it can be placed in soil and the roots shouldn’t have any problem growing!

Thanks so much for getting back to me! A few people told me that these guys are prone to root rot so it’s a little better to go straight into soil with these ones. I have a pothos in water that I’m just about to pot right now because its roots are about 4” and I’m so excited!! I did check on this one this morning and he’s strong and healthy but no roots yet :(

I have propagated this same plant & it’s super easy. :) All I did was stick it in soil, water & let it do its thing. I’ve been able to propagate more of this plant using the same method. As Olivia stated above, water propagation is also another way. :)

Thanks for getting back to me! I did check on him this morning and his leaves and everything are still really healthy but no roots yet. I do have 3 cuttings in the pot so I may try one in water but I was told they’re really prone to root rot so I tried the soil to be safer! Maybe I’ll pop one into water and see how it goes :)

When water propagating you don’t have to worry about root rot because it is the organic matter in wet soil that will cause roots to rot! Just make sure there’s no soil on the plant when putting it in the water and it won’t rot. Once you have some good roots you can plant it in soil. Hope this helps!

You can dip the cuttings in rooting hormone powder. Then, put it back into the soil. The powder boosts root growth. The roots are thread thin unlike a pothos plant. So, less handling is better. Assume it’s doing well if the stem and leaves look well. They put out tiny roots in about a week.
