Water vs Soil prop??? I see a lot of water propagation shared here and was curious of anyone’s thoughts on which is more successful. I haven’t tried propagating before, but I’ve taken some cuttings, dipped them in rooting powder, placed them in damp soil, and tented them. Now I’m wondering if I should stick them in water instead!

    I’ve personally had better luck with propagating in water. It’s also really cool to see them growing so quickly and seeing the roots grow in general.

    i’ve always done water propagations, i wait for the roots to get pretty established then put it in soil.

    It depends on the plant for me. I’ve had good luck with both. Stems with a few nodes placed in water works pretty well for me. If the plant is more succulent-like, I tend to do soil propagations. The cool thing about water propagation is that you can see the roots growing but for soil propagation it’s more guesswork.

    I usually do water but I transition to sphagnum moss before I stick in dirt because water roots are different than dirt roots and if it’s a sensitive or rare plant it may not like going straight from water to dirt. I have done water to dirt before but with my “easier” plants to make happy.

    I’ve done both. The trick to soil propagation is letting the cutting callus over where you cut it so it doesn’t rot when it’s in wet soil.

    I’ve had success with both. Spider plants, syngoniums and tradescantias root quickly in soil even without rooting hormone powder. Pothos and philodendrons does well in water. Cacti and succulents are best in soil. It depends on your preference. I have a lot of success growing roots with a cutting in a plastic ziploc bag with a damp paper towel. It acts like a mini terrarium.

    Same as above, I’ve done both. Personally, I think soil propagation is easier because I’ll just stick it in soil and water it now and then like a full grown plant. Eventually it grows roots and sustains itself. Water propagation can take longer to actually have a self sustaining plant because first you have to grow the roots which can take a long time, then you have to acclimate it to soil which also takes a long time.
