Excited to add a new plant to my collection! A coworker gave me this Heartleaf Philodendron cutting, and I want to make sure I give it the best start. Any tips on successfully propagating it? Water or soil…what’s worked best for you? Also, how long should I wait before potting it up? Thanks in advance for the advice!

I prefer to use water but with long strands like this I like to kind of curl up the stem and pin it into the soil. I don’t like to bury the stem too much. Since there’s no roots you want to have dampish soil, sphagnum moss, or stratum. I would try to keep it under a cloche just to keep the humidity up.

Those are lots of nodes to grow roots from! If youre up for experimenting, gently wind up the vine into a ball and set the whole ball in water. This should give it lots and lots of roots to bury. I saw this done with a tomato plant and it grew magnificently and gave huge fruits, ive always wanted to do it with a vine plant! 😄 Do what youre comfortable with, of course. This vine just looks like the perfect subject with the nodes so far apart 😋😋

Also! When the vine grows up, you can choose to let it grow up a trellise instead of letting it hang down in vines. Lots of people choose to let their pothos grow up trellises, they do very nicely on them, and the leaves grow larger this way… If you do choose to let it hang down, remember to pinch off vines before they get too long! This just means to clip the vine where you want it to stop growing. Then the plant can use its energy to grow a new vine. 🤗

I would do water. You could also cut some of the leaves off and cut the vine even smaller and have multiple cuttings. Also, while it is a philodendron heartleaf, it’s a variation called philodendron Brasil because of the variegation in the leaves.

Still exciting to have plants none the less! Now you can propagate this one and when it’s ready to plant, you can add to the one you have and make it bushier. Let’s not forget to hold wonder at these plants!

I actually think this isn’t the Brasil. The one I have at home doesn’t have these color leaves

Yes, it is a heartleaf but it’s again, a different variation. That is the philodendron mican. They start off a little pink then turn green. Be careful though that they don’t stay pink.

i prop all of my vine plants in sphagnum moss with a lid to create maximum humidity! just put the node down and wring out all the extra water from the moss but make sure it’s still damp and they should root pretty fast.

This is how I just started cuttings off my philodendron as well. Damp Spagnum moss, in a vessel with a lid, and under a grown light or somewhere they can get full sun.
