This is Maria. She is my first attempt at spider plant propagation, and I first started her in water on March 21. Almost 2 weeks later, she has yet to put out roots, and her color is also fading. What can I be doing better to encourage root growth and revive this cutting?

Did she have aerial roots when you put her in water? They’re small brown nubs on the bottom of the plant. If not, it’s not likely to grow more roots and survive

Oh dear I don't know 😭 If she hasn't put out roots by now she must not have had aerials and I cut her off too soon. 🫠 rip

Gotta wait til they have a mini root system of their own before cutting the cord.

I have never been able to do a spider plant in water- very jelly of those who can What ive done is prop it in soil and water every so often keeping the soil moist until ot looks like its drank water (i.e. roots have grown enough to get water into the leaves) And then lessen the watering to a more appropriate schedule

Hi Bella - here is what has worked for me - keep the leaves and stems out of the water - just the base where any nodes are - should be in water. But you will have to replace the water more often. It’s ok to lose some leaves when propagating in water. The plant is focusing on creating roots - not growing leaves so it’s putting its energy in that.

It’s easier to propagate spider babies in soil once the aerial roots develop. See the pic. I’m always propagating spider plants since I give them away. I only have one on a windowsill in water. Very slow grower. The ones in soil flourish especially when I just put them outside in bright indirect light and they get rain water once a week. I water with the garden hose if needed.
