1 year progress on Zz plant leaf propagation. They started in water last summer which took a few months to have soil ready roots. I planted 5 leaves per pot and only 3 have sprouted new growth in each. I knew this would take a long time and although this was successful, I won’t be doing it again. If you’re looking to propagate your Zz plant, stem cutting is the fast and easy way to go.

I have a stem in water right now since April and the roots are only about an inch. You think I can plant it in soil yet?

Has it grown a nice bulb yet? That’s usually what I’m looking for before I move it to soil.

I think you can wait a bit longer. Change the water out frequently. So these 3 guys here are pretty solid to go into soil.

I recommend separating the rhizomes actually — that’s even faster than stem cutting 😊 the “stems” (‘rachis’) are actually the leaves themselves, the “leaves” are leaflets that make up the whole rachis.

You’re right! Sometimes if a bunch of the bottom leaves are missing and it’s droopy, I just chop it.

Every single one of my zz prop attempts have failed 😣. Congratulations 🎉

So all I do is chop 6” of stem or so…clean blade, clean cut. Plop in room temp water and change it out every few days. It roots relatively quickly, about 3-6 weeks. Have you tried it differently?

I’ve tried multiple methods over the years, including this one. Just not having a success yet.

Sorry to hear. Sometimes Zz can sit there for months and months and not do a darn thing. Don’t give up though.

Yep, I had some I thought would eventually produce pups, but didn’t and have since died. I’ll keep trying when I get the chance.
