Hello! I read somewhere that you can put leftover scallion cuttings in water and they’ll grow. It’s worked so far—this is only two days of growth! I’m wondering if/when I should plant them in soil. They started with pretty developed roots. Thank you so much 🤍

    Aw cute! I haven’t tried this before, but soil sounds like a good idea to me. That way they can get some nutrients to keep growing. Something light like a seed starting mix would probably be good if you happen to have some The only other tip that comes to mind is that occasionally I see a house plant fertilizer that says not to use for plants intended for human consumption. So if you plan to fertilize but want to eat the scallions someday, I would double check your label. Good luck ☺️

      Awesome! I’ve run out of pots and soil so they’ll have to stay in the water for a bit but I’ll put them in soil as soon as possible. Thanks for the tip with the fertilizer! I didn’t even think about that.

    My mom used to just keep them in water and cut off what she needed. She never potted in soil

      Thanks for the input! I’ve done it once before this and just left them in water, but they didn’t grow. I might try to put these in soil and then if that doesn’t work I’ll just keep the next batch in water!

    legit just throw them in soil and let them do whatever. these guys are indestructible and also thrive off neglect

    Fertilizer would help them grow both in water and soil.

      Alright! I don’t usually fertilize my plants (I probably should get on that 😂), so I don’t really know anything about it. Do you have any brands you use/recommend?

      Plants need nutrients. I don’t have anything fancy. I use just a few plus I add manure to my pig pots outside. I rarely change the soil in the 18” wide pots. Fertilizer including manure adds back the nutrients.

    My grandma does this, she just leaves them in the water and changes it every few days. I bought her a little jar lid divider so they don't touch, off etsy

    I always do this, as soon as I get home with a new bunch from the store I put them in a glass of water and set it in a window with good lighting, and as long as you change the water at least once a week they usually will stay alive and keep growing for a couple months, definitely could save you from having to always buy a new bundle at the grocery store

    I keep my scallions in water and cut from them as I need and they continue to grow just staying in water

    Both in just water or in soil works for these. My roommates complain about them being in the windowsill so I usually plant them in soil outside, but since it's still freezing outside here I've just been keeping them in a cup on the windowsill in the kitchen and snipping them as needed and they've been working out great.

    I planted half of mine in soil when they were about 4-5” tall. The other half I kept in water. I think the ones in soil have grown a little better.
