Hi all! I bought a monstera Thai constellation off marketplace that was in pretty bad shape and I took a cutting off of it. It has been in water for about 2 weeks with rooting hormone (changing the water every couple days) and I let the end callous for 24 hours. It seems to be rotting. It had an aerial root that was about 20cm long and it went mushy and fell off and the end is getting a bit mushy too. Is there any way to fix this and stop it from happening? Thank you!! ☺️

Aerial roots are not designed to be submerged in water so yes this would promote rot. I am not sure if this is true on all plants but as I researched it is true of Thai constellation. Not all roots are created equal!

I realize this creates questions about all the little nubs at the propagation node. I am going to assume that it's only the longer roots that will rot, otherwise how would you propagate!

Thanks! So should I cut between the node and aerial root and try again??

Not sure this is true of all Monsteras. I tried to prop a cutting with aerial roots outside water & it wouldn't root. I put aerials in and it has huge primary root growth & even a little secondary root (picture 2) growth.

I'm not really sure but it's worth a try.

Have you tried vermiculite? I have used it on a few plants that don’t like to root in water.

I did a little looking around and although I found somewhere that said Ariel Roots shouldn't go in water, I found another place that said you could propagate in water so take your pick! It also recommended air layering which might be a good option for you to try. A good website for lots of information on Thai constellation is lovethatleaf.com. the article is called "monstera Thai constellation the ultimate care guide (and how not to kill them).
