Story time- My trandescantia journey has been an arduous one. I took a clipping from my roommates room. She was in a west facing window and grew to be so big. She got super leggy and I was propping right into into soil, seemed to work. I moved and had her in north facing window, she thrives… then died back. Then I moved and had her in a south west facing window… she died completely. Two times I’ve cut back and propped in water and they grow and thennnnn they die. I am doing one last Hail Mary for the two cuttings I have left and trying perlite and water. I think I may hate this plant… I want to love her but she’s just too picky. Wish me love and indirect light! 😂🌱🫧

These plants are sooo picky, even a drop of water on a leaf and it’ll die… but then they want a ton of water so I found bottom watering to be the only way to work for these

Oh! Wow, that’s something I never thought about. If these take, I’ll do that! Thank you

I think I might have to 😭 my bf keeps commenting on how stressful my hobby is bc I’m a helicopter plant parent. They’re all in our living room so I can’t help but look at them all day lol

Omg same! I have so many plants but for some reason tradescantias hate me !!! All other varieties of plants seem to do great in my apartment. Being a plant parent is very fulfilling (& a bit stressful at times 😹) ✨

I don’t know what specifically is drawing you to tradescantias, so this might not fill that desire. But the purple heart spiderwort variety of tradescantias is very easy to grow. You can treat it like a succulent and it will do great. It will also do fine with more water and less light than a succulent. Think of it as the knockout rose of tradescantias.😄

I’m going to try! I’m gonna add it to my wish list and sneak one in while my bf isn’t looking 😂

Is this the purple one? Purple Heart Spiderwort? If so, I might can help as I have been growing them since 2006. Only that variety, my understanding is the other varieties are different.

It’s Wandering Jude (has a couple of other names, but I like that one)

Hmmm, couldn’t find that variety, but if it’s not in the spiderwort sub category then my understanding is it will be much harder to grow, so I am no help.🤪 I hope you can get it to take off and flourish!❤️

Maybe I’ll just get a spiderwort and see how it goes :) thank you for your time🌱🫧

Lots of indirect light, higher humidity if possible. Mine are on my screened in porch that has light from North, East, and West. (Southwest Florida) Good luck!

I showed my 8 year old one in a green house the other day. I told her this is what ours is SUPPOSED to look like!! 😂 Three of four of mine that I propagated and potted a month ago are currently dying. I’m SO over it!! I have a ton of them tied together and stuffed in a water jar so they grow roots and that is doing fine, but almost all of them in dirt are about done!

It’s the dirt for me toooo! Maybe I just keep them in perlite and water. Or maybe I throw them into the woods to decide their own fate. Over it 😂

I’d been watering when I wrote this. I decided to yank the rest out of the dirt and pop them in water too. Lol we’ll see if it lives! If not, woods it is!!! 😂

I’m here to represent the Purple Heart variety of tradescantias! It’s one of my oldest and favorite plants. Mine lives in full sun all year entangled in about three pots. It’s over 15 years old and 5ft wide It can take being frozen a week and withstood the one month of 100°F+ temperatures last summer. It lives off rain water. I water with the garden hose when it’s too hot. It self propagated to nearby pots in spring. It used to be a single hanging basket. It’s growing on a concrete patio.

I’m in Zone 9a, Texas gulf coast. I get about 2 weeks worth of freezing temperatures. This variety is tougher than other tradescantias. This sits on the north side of my house in full sun.

Yep, that’s why I was asking if she had that variety. I love them!❤️ I have been growing them since 2006 in GA and TX. They are like a succulent and hardy. I have grown them in the ground and the leaves die back during big freezes but usually come back from the roots the next year. I have propagated them so many times over moves and planted the base of one at my aunts house so I could just take the cuttings with me.😄 I currently grow them in hanging baskets in full western sun in TX and water 1 or 2 times a month. They die back in those pots in the winter, but I don’t have room to bring them in. I just make cuttings in the fall and propagate them over winter to replant in the spring. Lazy gardening at its finest! Yours is beautiful!😍
