Hear ye, here ye… Is this prop going to make it or not? For those of you in the know (and I am not not one of those!), I can’t figure out if this cutting from a Chinese Evergreen should go to heaven or not. The.

Silly me… I had the above post in process with both of these pictures and, as usual, it got screwed up somehow. So here is the second picture. You should be able to see two white roots (???) sticking out towards the base of the right stem. Are these what I need to propagate? On the above post, there is a picture of the original route sticking out on the bottom left; it was a beautiful white root, very pronounced, and has now receded. Is it a goner or what? TXS were taking the time to evaluate this. 😊💚🪴
0 likesFor my fourth try 😵💫😵💫😵💫, hopefully you can see two teeny white things at the bottom of the stem on the right. Are those the beginning of new roots? I have had this propagation for several months now; it is soooo slow to do anything, including having its two leaves die. Final analysis??? 😊💚🪴
0 likesThose two teeny white things are hard to see. Look about halfway on the stem on the right when you blow the picture up to see it.
0 likesI’m have one that has died and revived many times lol if you can just cut off the dead leaf and leave it. I have mine in water under a grow light and little by little it is growing new leaves
1 likeWill try… Thanks for the info. 😊💚🪴

I thought those had to be propped by division not cutting.

In my experience, these plants do not do well wet and you may be better off putting it in damp moss or fluval stratum.
2 likesJust the answer I was looking for! But I don’t know what fluval stratum is??? I do have some dried sphagnum moss on hand. Do I just soak it in water and lay the prop on top of it or in it? If you can give me a few more details, I would be so happy. And how long does the prop stay in/on the moss? TKS. 😊💚🪴

Yes!!! Fluval stratum has changed my prop game for real! It’s sold as an aquarium substrate for plants that is safe for animals! It’s already rich in volcanic minerals & plants LOVE it. Just keep it moist & cuttings root FAST & fuzzy! So many options to use it too! The dark is a big part of rooting too.

I don’t use moss for props often, but some plants just are picky. Another consideration is humidity. I have put cuttings a glass cloche too, & some (pothos) will root top to bottom in that humidity!
1 likeI researched the fluval stratum and the cheapest I could find on Amazon was 19 bucks. Do you know if I can get a smaller quantity by going to a store or is there another brand that’s cheaper? Before I reinvent the wheel, so to speak, I thought I’d see what info you have on this product. TIA. 😊💚🪴

It is pricey, I got it on Amazon when marked down for prime day. I just saw 2 options at Petsmart but it was even more expensive! It’s worth it because it lasts forever & you don’t need a lot for props. I keep the bag with my other soil amendments.

I have one of these that I tried chopping and propping. The top only just started sprouting roots after like 5 months. It’s in a propagation box in perlite. I had a couple center cuts that I tried in water and one in moss. They all rotted and died. I think they’re just super slow 🤷♀️ I think you’ve got a couple root nubs starting though!
