I don’t know if I’ve done this correctly. My philodendron had root rot and there was no saving the roots. So when I went to repot, I just divided the branches (each are about 2 feet long with new leaf growth much smaller than the older leaves), and placed about 4 inches of each in a separate jar of water. I heard if you’re propagating, to use cutting so they don’t have to go through so much photosynthesis. But I also heard you could divide the plant if you have healthy roots. Since I don’t have roots, should I cut these into pieces instead or will I be able to get roots with propagating long stems? *** I really hate to break it apart with so many healthy leaves.*** Thank you all!!

I had the absolute hardest time with my brasil.. I had to chop it all up because the roots were destroyed when I got in on fb marketplace. Half the cuttings died, half are just now growing in soil (i chopped her before spring) Now, I know it’s pretty hard to chop her up, but it gives the best rate of survival. I do up to 3-4 leaves on a stem, with 1-2 nodes underwater. and I put them in perlite water. I did this in regular water and it worked too but I think it helps to give the leaves stability so they don’t fall into the water

Bright bright light!! Bright as possible without burning it. I had mine under a grow light and it took around 2-3 months for roots to be ready

I just put a neon pothos too soon and lost one of the cuttings. When in doubt wait for more roots!

Hate to agree with eva but your best bet for success is chopping. If you want you could just do one or two chops per stem so they keep as much length as possible. But more cuttings gives you a higher chance of success

Agree with Eva and Kades. I'd chop into 4 leaf stems and give them some rooting powder in the water. Bonus points for throwing a pothos cutting in the prop glass as well

I do have a pothos I can cut from too!

I almost always prop with pothos now because I see improved root growth rates when they're in with the other plants. I've had a lot less cutting loss as well. Obviously this is all anecdotal, but it never hurts to try 😊

Wow you might be onto something, pothos do propagate rediculously fast in my experience… maybe they add whatever chemical they need to accelerate root growth into the water early??

That’s fascinating! I could afford to put the 2 together. Hopefully that helps! Thank you!

Cut it or it will sit there forever feeding energy to the stem and leaves and not to growing roots. Then, it will start dropping those burdensome leaves to focus on roots. It’s hard to get rid of large amount of the stems. Just do it or be in a 4 weeks dilemma like me on whether to prop or toss. That’s a full grocery bag of Brasil and Silvery Anne cuttings I hesitated to toss. Trashed it this morning! I have 2 more very long Brasil and Scindapsus plants to cut. I can’t create more plant babies! I have no extra winter space or lighting to prop plants while trying to downsize.😭

This is so sad! Thank you so much for the tips. I honestly don’t have much room for the propagating myself. I’m just going to keep 1 or 2 cuttings and if it doesn’t work I’m buying a new one lol

They propagate very easily if you cut them down to 2 nodes per cutting. Put the bottom node in water. Remove all leaves that are underwater. They could rot and contaminate the water. Place in bright indirect light or a grow light. Change the water once a week or when cloudy. Roots grow out within 2 - 3 weeks for the short cuttings. Fertilize with diluted fertilizer after the roots emerge. I also add SuperThrive plant vitamins with the fertilizer. Plant when the roots reach 2 inches or longer.

Thank you!! This is super helpful! I’ll get rid of the leaves in the jars right away!
