Plant Hoarder 🌱

This is Berry. She is a 12 year old Arrowhead plant. She was repotted a year or so ago and stays so healthy, but needs more space. She used to stand tall in the sun before they got so long and heavy. How would I go about propagating these crazy offshoots so I can help her? Where would you cut on the coiled areas? They remind me of overgrown dog toenails.

I personally would leave the coiled area intact, just because the nodes are so close together. As for propagating in general, as long as there is a node on the cutting it will work. You could also stake her to give her support

I didn’t think of staking. I may consider that option.

You have lots of options. But what I would do without really examining the base of the plant, is to remove the entire root ball and try to divide it into sections. I would trim off any and all straggling segments even if all you have is a little cluster of roots with one or two leaves. Replant the individual segments in a smaller pot and if you wish take portions of the things you cut off and propagate them in soil or water. You could also keep your larger pot and position two or three of the cuttings around one of the segments to create a bigger pot. I'm not expressing myself very clearly here. For example in photograph 2, cut the stem off right at the pot trim the knot of one or two leaves and excess stem and just plant the whole knot. Maybe use a little rooting hormone.

My first thought was also to divide and conquer because it looks root bound based on the sprawl and weak limbs. Insufficient light can make it look limp and the colors will look dull or darker. I would cut off all the limp growth at the rim of the pot and propagate in water about a month before moving to soil in smaller pots. I would separate the root ball of the mother plant into 3 or 4 sections and repot in smaller pots. I would give them more hours of light or get them closer to a window to increase the light intensity. A grow light is good too. The light will brighten the pink colors and give more leaves with the lighter colors. 🪴🍀

I just learned about rooting hormone the other day. I need to look into this more. I think dividing the plant is likely the path. Thanks.

She is pretty close to an East facing window. I’m hoping the return of spring light will bring back her pinks. Looks like divide and conquer is the path to take. Thank you.

Remember, rooting hormone and Roots stimulator are not the same thing.
