Hi! I’d love to get my rubber tree to branch out some more and create a cutting in the process. I have a couple of questions about that. 1. If I cut where indicated in the picture (pink line), is it likely to have my plant creat two branches there? It is not the most dominant branch. Or, should I cut the other, more dominant branch? 2. For the cutting, I was thinking about just sticking it in a jar of water. This seems to work with many other plants (pothos, monstera) but I’ve never done it with a ficus. Online, it seems somewhat split between water vs air layering and curious if anyone has had a good experience with water propagation. Thanks!

If you’re willing to endure the awkward phase I’d cut both so they’re even. You can also try notching the main stem (any of the stems really) to encourage growth there. not sure where you’re located but if you’re headed toward winter I would wait until early spring to do any pruning

if you’re cutting, water propping is the way to go. air layering is what you’ll do to encourage growth on your plant without cutting. your cuts should result in two new growth points per cut 👍🏻

Thanks! Idk if I have the stomach to cut both but maybe I’ll bite the bullet and do it. Thanks again!

I’ve had great luck with water propping!! I’ve chopped mine into singular leaf sections so I have a ton rn. You can replant those in your planter once they root if you want!

Nice - that’s the idea. Glad to know that it’s worked out for you!

i have one i’m propagating in water at the moment and it’s taken FOREVER to grow roots. i almost gave up and tossed it out till a few days ago i noticed the tiniest root starting to form. it works, just takes a lot longer than the average pothos or monstera to root and seems more risky in my opinion.

Ah that is good to know! How many nodes do you have on the cutting? I’m curious if it works better if there are less nodes on the cutting like Courtney has suggested 🤔

Mines just singular nodes, I’ve noticed better propping in like covered cups rather than glass ones too 🤷🏼‍♀️

i had to chop it due to some rotting so i probably only have 2 now.
