My mom cut me a few bits off her Christmas cactus she got after my grandmother passed. I’m new to keeping plants alive, I’ll be devastated if I can’t keep at least one of the cuttings alive. Can anyone help me?

KatelynPlease place these cuttings in bright, indirect light. They’ll need a bit more light as they’re rooting. I’m so sorry about your grandmother’s passing; she’ll live on through your plant 🌱☺️

Thank you so much. She passed almost 10 years ago… I’m just not figuring out how to keep house plants alive. (I started with orchids, which seems wild to me.) I’m sorry if this seems dumb but, can you be more specific than bright indirect light? It did not seem to do well in my east facing window (I live in MI and there’s a small overhang.) So I moved it to a south facing window that’s bubble glass and there’s a grow light. I’ll be able to move it again tomorrow after I get the lights I ordered. I guess should it not be directly under the grow light?

Bright indirect light is where it gets plenty of the light that bounces around in the room all day, but doesn't get roasted by being where the light comes in the window at midday. Look at the shadows in the room. From the window, you'll see a bright rectangle of light that's your direct light, then the whole room in sort of a medium light, and then shadows. Bright indirect can be in the window's rectangle in the morning, but should fall in the medium light at midday. For the cactus, make sure the pot is a good fit (about 1-2 inches in diameter larger than the root mass, in this case just the stem.) Give it a potting soil (nothing fancy, not cactus soil) with a little bit of higher drainage mix at the bottom. Water it as if it's an average houseplant; because these are tropical cacti they get more water than succulents usually would. Since you have multiple cuttings you can plant them all together (and the roots might eventually fuse into one plant) or you can give them seperate smaller pots. Bury them about one and a half leaf sections deep. If the cuts are fresh, let them callous over before planting (should take maybe a day). These are pretty happy plants that are forgiving of mistakes, so you should do fine :)

My mom did not let them callous over before she planted them, but she did use a propagation powder on them. Thank you for your explanation on direct and indirect light. That makes sense.
