I know it’s wrong but it makes me so happy to take pieces of outdoor plants I see I like in public and try to propagate it and learn about it for fun. I find it very de-stressing to take walks and pick a piece of something and then do this. I know it’s wrong but i look forward to my daily walk (I live in Florida so plants are everywhere all the time outside). I don’t dig up peoples plants or take huge pieces from peoples houseplants or sneak around their backyard but if I am walking past a neighbors or public place on the sidewalk and they have a giant rose bush I will pinch off maybe 2-3 inches of a stem? I only do this on really big outdoor plants. Really how horrible is this? It’s bad

It’s theft. It’s a crime and it’s bad. Stop posting about how good it feels to steal. Just because you can reach it from a public sidewalk doesn’t mean you should steal private property. Everyone who walks by a neighbor’s well cared for plants and decides it’s ok to steal a few is destroying something others put work and money into growing. You should ask the owner. Maybe, they will allow it or give you a few pieces from hidden areas on the plant.

In all fairness I agree it’s bad but I really am not going for peoples well cared for garden plants it’s more like this is a picture of my back area I am talking about that I have taken a pothos cutting - this is actually my condo so I guess I own a percentage of this and it’s technically invasive so I may be saving the condo money but I digress 😂

My objection is to plucking parts of a rose bush plant (or similar) from a neighbor as stated in your comment. You could be the catalyst that sets off everyone else walking by to tear off parts from other’s private property because the plants now looked plucked as if it’s ok to do so without permission.

Yep I wouldn’t like it if it was my plants you were pinching from. I grow tomatoes in pots in my front yard and people will sometimes just pick a tomato like it’s ok because it’s in reach. It’s absolutely not ok in my opinion. Try to look at it from the perspective if everyone or even every 5th person who walked by did this. How much plant would be left after a short period of time?

I’m so sad people hated this post so much, so much of these things are lopped off ever few weeks so people can get past the sidewalk but it’s still “stealing” - I just like learning how plants grow 😂

I’d be super upset if someone broke off any piece of my plants or shrubs 😟. Like super upset, especially after how much I spent on them and how much time I spend caring for them. I don’t think it should be encouraged. If they’re trimmed often, you could ask for trimmings from the owner? Or maybe you could join a local plant group on Facebook and trade off plants with folks in your area that you can learn on? People will often give away surplus plants that are growing/spreading in their yard.

In all honesty I didn’t want to bother anyone and knock on their door. I couldn’t imagine someone could really actually be upset if 4 nodes of a gigantic shrub were pinched off bc honestly no one would ever ever notice. I thought they would be more annoyed I knocked and woke the baby or the dog or the meeting. But I also have autism so my assumptions are sometimes wrong

Yeah, some people, like myself, put a significant amount of time into their yards. Some of my plants/ shrubs I drove several times to a greenhouse over an hour away to find, and sometimes waited for months for stuff to be in stock, not to mention to cost. That’s why I’d be upset if anyone put their hands on mine. I’m not trying to supply the whole community after all that hard work, I just want my yard to look pretty and bring joy to people who see it. That’s just my personal experience, but I hope it also gives some clarity as to why it may be upsetting to some people.
