I was gifted this beautiful umbrella tree that is now 6.5’ tall. There’s a piece at the bottom that I want to separate from the mother plant but I’ve read that propagating umbrellas don’t always work. I don’t want to lose a mature, healthy, beautiful cutting. Should I leave it? Or do you have any tips to help me succeed? Fairly new plant mamma over here.

What a beauty! 🤩 Is the part you want attached to the mother plant? Or does it have it’s own roots?

Get one of these and put it in the part you want to propagate

That’s a great idea! You can also wrap in sphagnum moss and plastic wrap. This will allow that section to grow roots at its node before chopping it. Look up air layering on YouTube. But excellent idea

Thank you both! I will look into that. If it doesn’t root I won’t lose it because it will still be attached 😍 brilliant.

I was in awe when I first saw him (well honestly, I still am). And so happy she wanted to gift him to me. She grew him from a 4” set she got from Costco. He’s so beautiful 😍
