I’ve had my Thanksgiving cactus for one year. I never repotted it but it seemed to be thriving and growing up to a few months ago. However, a few weeks ago segments started to fall off until half the plant fell away. Any idea what caused the plant to drop entire stems and how to prevent it? 2) Any advice on how to propagate the dropped nodes? How do I know they’re ready for soil/ do I replant in the old pot or smaller pot? All together or separately? Thank you!

I want to say rot. Are they squishy?

Now after a few days, yes. When they fell they were plump. The bottom-most one was black and came right out, like there were no roots.

Yes that DEFINITELY sounds like root rot. I get that occasionally with my pothos that I keep in a mason jar of water (I’m out of pots 😅). I cut off the dead/black sections and make sure there are still nodes to produce roots for propagation. Each time I do the plant gets much happier and grows a bunch 😁 Oh and when propagating, I usually wait until the roots are about one or 2 inches before I try planting it.

I’ve got some propagations of this plant and when I read up on it, it stated that 4 or more segments maybe too much for it to root. Have they started rooting yet? I have 3 Segments per prop and they are all rooting. I’m gna let the roots grow a bit before reporting them tho! Glad to hear your little one seems to be doing okay now! They are lovely little plants

For propping, I like to use water for longer stems. I haven’t had luck cutting it into multiple nodes. Soil propping works for them too, but inconsistent watering while the roots develop can be bad

None of them are rooting, but it’s only been 3 days. How long do they usually take to sprout roots?

It can take a while. Once they have roots they will grow quicker. Just make sure they aren’t rotting (black, yellow, smelly) and keep the water reasonably fresh

Mine did the same thing when I brought it indoors for the winter. I kept watering it and misting it on schedule and it seems completely back to normal. Hopefully it’s just a phase it’s going through.
