Hey, anyone have any suggestions about propagating a ficus (rubber plant) in water? I successfully did it with a small stem, once, and gave it to a friend. Now I tried to do it again and have been much less successful and I don’t want to lose the rest of the stems I’ve already cut. Thanks in advance!

I’ve done it twice so far by cutting baby offshoot stems (5-7 leaves with a bud at the tip) off my main Ficus Altissima plant and both went well. I used colored glass bottles both times to give the roots a little bit of darkness, broke off the bottom leaves so there were a few nodes below the water level, and would replace the water every week or so. I had them a few feet away from a south-facing window. They developed a nice root ball within a month, so I planted them in a well-draining soil mix and they popped out new leaves in about 2 weeks. Hope that helps!

Thank you SO much! I totally forgot I put some nodes below the waterline last time and I think that is the difference. This time I just put the stems straight in the water and they just weren’t doing well. I cut them down and pulled off some leaves. Hoping for the best. Thanks again!
