Not sure if it’s normal, but I want to try and grow an avocado plant too. I think you put the pit in a moist paper towel and put it in a bag for some time? And then when it has roots you put them in water? Is this how you started it?

yup! i left it in a wet paper towel in a plastic bag, misted the plastic bag, and checked on it every couple of days until the root would be long enough to reach the water in a container/glass/etc.

I guess this explains why I’ve never had any luck. I was suspending mine over a jar of water with toothpicks. Ouch. Mushy nothings.

Mine took super long but be patient!! I did put mine in soil around this point and it eventually grew a stem up and sprouted leaves :)

Mine grew one super long root for ages, I finally put it into some potting soil and then after what seemed like forever (a few weeks) it started shooting up. When it got to 12” I cut it down by half above a pair of leaves, to stimulate more bushy growth. Now it’s twice the size and I need to repot it!
