I took this new shoot off of our lilac bush a few weeks ago. At first I didn’t think it was going to make it as the original leaves died off but then it grew these new leaves. My issue is that most of new leaves look nothing like the original; there is one little stem that does so Im highly confused! Last picture is the mother plant; a Bloomerang Lilac, first is of the leaves that look nothing like the original, including the leaf pattern and the second photo is the one leaf set that looks like the original lilac bush.

My guess - the shoot is either reverted or the plant was grafted to a hardier root base and the shoot came from the base. Similar to roses.

Thanks; that is exactly what I was thinking about it being grafted. I knew they did that with roses but wasn’t sure about other plants
