i have a calathea that has stopped growing new leaves for the past month or so. i transported it home from college and it has not been happy since. i put it in the bathroom so it can get enough humidity, and there is a window so it’s getting the indirect light it needs. i have trimmed the dead leaves and brown spots shown in the photo. i think i may have overwatered it, but i’m not sure if that would affect its growth. the only other thing i can think of would be to add some fertilizer but other than that i have no idea, so i’d appreciate any suggestions!

May be getting too much humidity, and not enough light. It’s probably stressed from the changes in areas.

I agree with the other commentor, the plant is probably just stressed about the environment changing. I would just keep cutting off the dead leaves and if nothing changes, try re-potting/looking at the roots for more information

I have the exact same Calathea that did the same to me and I thought it was me until I learned that apparently Calatheas are super dramatic and often start to die after 6 months. A couple of things I tried- repotted with a good mix soil that had lots of air (coir, perlite, and tropical soil mix) to keep it from getting waterlogged. I also made sure it got enough light and put it near a grow light. Then I changed to distilled water because apparently it’s sensitive to the minerals in tap. All that to say she’s been hanging on to just 1 leaf and it’s been a few weeks since the new regimen and I was about to give up on her, but just noticed new growth today. They are just really temperamental!

wow, you may be right because i’ve had her for about 4-5 months now so that may be the case! i have definitely realized that calatheas are drama queens since doing a lot of research on them. thank you for your detailed response!!

unless you give it the environment of a rainforest/jungle it’s gonna die ☹️

if you love calatheas and want a lower maintenance one i recommend rattlesnake plant. regular humidity and watering it will thrive.
