I’ve been trying to propagate my giant stick cactus for ages without any luck - but I just checked these cuttings I’ve had in water for about a week and I’ve finally got some roots!! So excited. This is what I learned from my failures: must take cutting from a part of the plant that’s actively growing, ideally from the top of the primary stem. Let the cutting callus over for a week before putting in rooting medium. I did not have any luck putting the cuttings in soil to root despite letting them callous and using rooting hormone (3 months no roots). The roots line to be in the shade, so a prop cone or something is helpful (pretty sure this is true for most plants). This particular plant is apparently very slow to root, so I’m surprised to see roots after only a week - it seems like water is the best medium for me, but I’m no expert, this is just what I learned from failing! 😬

Thank you for sharing your experience with this plant. I haven’t tried to propagate it but I’ve heard it can be tricky

So interesting to hear your trial and errors with this difficult plant! Glad this method is working!! What is a prop cone?

I’ve had reasonable luck with putting cuttings directly in soil. I’ll have to try them in water.
