Question. I would love for this to grow more bushy, should I do the pinch technique here at the top or prune? Or is this a leaf? Sorry for the ignorance, very new plant mom here. I also hear that you can make notches near the nodes…HELP!

I would cut a little notch or cut under where you want your fig to become more bushy. That is a fig, right?

No, it is not. It is a burgundy rubber plant.

Hey! Pinching off the top growth will definitely promote some branching. The new growth is a new leaf, so it might need to be sacrificed in order to get a new branch. On my rubber tree, I wait until a new leaf unfurls and then pinch when the new growth is smaller.

It’s been like this for a month and nothing has happened. I did have in a spot that was low light so that may be why. I recent moved it to a place with more light and i want a bushy tree. Lol. I think I may just pinch the top and make some notches ! Ty!

Good idea! If it hasn’t grown at all, then pinch away! It should start growing new buds pretty quickly. Good luck!

I’d recommend the notching technique right above several nodes. Several because they may or may not all result in a new branch. There are tons of tutorial videos on notching for rubber trees or fiddle leaf figs (similar ways) on you tube for a visual, on how to do this. But it should be a 1/3 deep notch cut. I prefer this method to chopping top because you can often get a new branch to grow much lower down so its not creating a top heavy situation, and because it will probably look more balanced.

I did pinch the top but I am going to notch the bottom part of the tree today.

Some videos say to cut out a rectangle and some day just to make a slit….?

Notch and use cinnamon. Just a clean cut—no need to have to be a carpenter and be cutting shapes. Gardening is complicated enough when you’re learning.
