I was gifted two Spiderettes by my employer. I was informed that they are very easy to propagate, and she told me how she does it. I have followed her steps to the letter, and it’s been about 3 weeks. They do have tiny little roots, but they’re also starting to turn brown on some of their leaves. What am I doing wrong? I’ve never propagated a plant before and I’m worried I’m killing these babies before they can start!

Spider plant leaf tips always turn brown no matter what I do. I’ve heard of water conditioner or filtered/distilled water plus a very dilute fertilizer. I’ve just kind of learned to live with them

Yes, the brown leaf tips are common for spider plants. I switched to distilled water for them and I think that helps. ? It’s also common for prop leaves to get “sad” looking because the energy is diverted to making roots. Spider plants also need very well-draining soil.

Also like to be kept moist when propagating.

How big is the pot you have the cutting in? I found using small containers (even reusing yogurt containers and putting holes in bottom) is good for small cuttings to prevent the roots from rotting

I worried about that. I only had 6 inch pots, so that’s what I put them in. Maybe that’s part of the problem!

The large pot and excess dense soil will cause root rot and dying leaves from the roots sitting in water too long. Try using a 2” to 4” diameter plastic cap recycled from a spray can or plastic bottle. Small food containers from fruit cups and yoghurt, as suggested, works when it’s urgent. Plastic shot glasses or other small disposable drink cups work well. The bottom section of a small water bottle also works in an emergency. Drill holes in all the containers.

Did they already have roots? I propagated mine in water for several mi the first to grow our the roots. Then planted them in soil.
