Hi all! I attempted to propagate our red robin hedges a few months ago and they didn’t end up going so well. I just took a few cuttings of the newer growth and put them in water under a grow light. I have absolutely no idea if you can even propagate them this way but I thought I’d give it a go. They lasted for about 8 weeks looking super healthy (I changed the water weekly and fertilised every few weeks) and then they got droopy and died. Does anyone have any tips on propagating these, or any sort of hedges or fruit trees as we would like to have a few more on our property and I thought it would be fun to propagate them instead of buying them. Thanks!!

I’m not familiar with this plant but usually you need a node to propogate this way. If there’s a node I’m Wondering if you let the stems callous for a day or two. If they went straight into water maybe they started rotting?

I go with you yes you need a node and they need to be in dirt by the 2/3 week

These look like just leaf and petiole, and not any nodes. Generally you need to remove a section with multiple leaves, remove the bottom leaves, and place the bottom section where those leaves were in water or soil/media.

Aside from what's already been mentioned, rooting hormone can help (you can use it as powder or dilute it in water). And for especially stubborn species (side-eye at my oak trees), you can try air layering instead

Thanks everyone for the replies! This is the photo of them before I put in water, I’m fairly sure they all had nodes and i did remove the bottom leaves. I left them out to callous overnight. None seemed to rot all they just didn’t grow any roots and they wilted and died after about 2 months. I even tried one with a woody stem and it lasted longer but didn’t grow roots.
