hi everyone!! so i have had a satin pothos cutting in water trying to propagate it for over a month now & it’s still not growing any roots. am i doing something wrong or is this normal? i was expecting it to take 2-4 weeks, but its probably been 6 & there’s not even a peek of a root popping out yet! edit: i used filtered water & i do not have rooting powder so didnt use any of that. i’m thinking maybe i need to cut it closer to the node?

They grow SO SLOW - I’ve also been propping mine for weeks, there’s finally been some root development but they’re small. I read that adding cuttings from fast rooting plants can help with their rooting hormones As long as the cutting doesn’t develop rot I’d keep it in water

okay, that gives me some relief. thank you! what would be an example of a fast rooting plant?

Most pothos, I use cuttings from my Neon pothos and also my tradescantia

Every other plant usually propagates in water just fine for me but with these ones in particular prop boxes have been amazing! My set up is a layer of lecca on the bottom and some moist perlite, sphagnum moss and vermiculite mixed together and then the cuttings on top and I’ve found that they tend to grow roots pretty quickly and there’s less chance of the ends rotting. That’s just what’s worked for me though and it’s been a lot of trial and error to figure it out.

Depending on how much stem is below the node you could just trim that off a little bit. Since the roots developed at the node, the excess stem is just a place for rot to start. If you do not change the water, I would not start. Since pothos produces a generous amount of rooting hormone, changing the water would be counterproductive.

okay i will try cutting a little more off of the stem and see if maybe that helps!

I had the same problem! She died two months later without a single root! She had a tiny millimeter nub for weeks that stalled and did nothing until she gave out and died suddenly. the other pothos propagates did great. Maybe it was too cold or maybe too much sun… either way, im not trying again. In the future, im buying my satins with roots!

Its getting warmer, so you might have a fighting chance! Dont put it in a direct sunbeam. Mist it, and mist the underside as well!
