Hi there! I got this gorgeous spider plant when I first moved into my new place and it was doing so well! It was very full and had all sorts of little babies—some of which I’ve since propagated. However, I noticed that some of its leaves were turning yellow/brown and dying off. There are also some brown tips on leaves that otherwise appeared quite healthy. And today, I noticed that the leaves are paler/less vibrant than they were. It normally sits on a shelf next to my big window, which faces south-east, and I’ve included some pictures of when I first got it (the first two pictures) versus today for comparison (the last picture). I feel so bad because it was doing really well. I’d love to hear any and all thoughts on what might be the cause of this! Thank you :’)

    It's more than likely a watering issue. Is it getting too much? Too little? The top inch of the soil should be dry before you water again. Also, chlorophytum tends to dislike tap water because of the minerals sometimes found in it. This is typically indicated by browning of the tips of the leaves. One more cause for the leaves fading could possibly be too much light. Is it receiving any direct sunlight? If so, try moving it so that no sunlight is directly on it at any point in the day.

      First of all, thank you! I really appreciate your detailed response. The soil was quite dry when I checked today so I did water it, but I have been using tap water. I’ll definitely switch, but would filtered water (using say, a brita) do the trick? As for the light, it does get quite bright, but I keep the blinds angled to prevent any of my plants from getting the truly direct sunlight. I also hoped it being on the shelf might help with that, but maybe it’s still too much. Anyways, I’ll try some of your recommendations! Thanks again :)

    I'd venture to guess that this is simply caused by lack of watering. If planta is not giving you reminders frequently enough, I would go in and create a custom schedule. Brita filters unfortunately do not filter out fluoride-which is the main culprit in regards to minerals in tap water chlorophytum doesn't like. It doesn't hurt to use filtered water though. Distilled or collected rainwater would work best. Leaf tips can also brown due to lack of humidity, but right now, I think the focus should be on getting a good, stable watering schedule.

      I just wanted to say thanks again! It looked so much better today after watering it yesterday. Happy that it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought :)

    To me this looks like it’s probably a lighting issue. Spider plants tend to get pale if they aren’t getting enough light. Watering is pretty easy with them, because when they’re thirsty they either fold their leaves or they droop. I always wait for those signs before watering. And the brown tips are normal and are just a side effect of not using distilled water, and the plant is still perfectly happy.

      Thank you! I think it might have been needing water since it looks much better today, but I’ll definitely keep an eye on it :)
