Orchid Lovers! Is she saveable??? She had multiple rounds of root rot until I finally bought orchid bark. I had to very drastically cut back her root system and she dropped 5 leaves! Now her last two roots look moldy but I’ve been following the watering schedule! I’m worried that if I cut these she won’t have any way to get nutrients and die, but if I leave the mold will spread and kill her. Any ideas?
3% hydrogen peroxide applied directly to the moldy areas. If the root is still firm and healthy feeling and smelling, keep the roots and maybe try a hydro or semi hydro propagation with root drops in the water to encourage root growth and orchid fertilizer in the next watering or water change to encourage leave and stem growth. If there’s green, there is something to save!
2 Mi piace I forgot to mention, repeat 3%HP treatment as you see the mold or slime growth but not every time. You don’t want to kill the healthy bacteria as well as the bad bacteria
0 Mi piaceSince the stem is yellow, your odds of success are low. Test the roots, cut the squishy ones, keep the firm ones. Treat with hydrogen peroxide to kill the rot. Pot it up in bark and use a stake(s) to help stabilise it. You want the bark to stay very humid, but not sopping wet to encourage new roots. Using distilled water can also help reduce rot problems. Orchids can't do full hydro because they're epiphytes and need air around their roots, but you can do semi-hydro instead of bark if you want (most of the time, supsend it over a pool of water without being in it, to provide high air humidity. Water it by soaking its roots in 20 minute sessions about once a week. Avoid getting water in the crown, where the leaf can trap it)
