   Hard scale (the less fluffy-looking relatives of mealybugs). To deal with them, first prune out any really badly affected parts and throw them away (scales can move, so seal them in a ziplock bag). Then physically remove as many scales as you can (touch them directly with a q-tip soaked in alcohol. Hard scales may take more effort to remove than soft mealies.) Then treat the entire plant with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Repeat treatment may be needed as these insects are often most affected when immature. It can also help to repot and replace the soil in case any laid eggs there. Quarantine the plant away from others to prevent them from spreading, and monitor it. If things worsen and you need a harsher insecticide, use one with pyrethrins. Inspect your other plants to make sure the scales haven't spread already

     Most scales have a lifespan of 31 days or less, so if you are clear of scales or mealies for two entire months, you're done
