This is a Calathea Dottie. She is fighting her way back with 2 new leaves in process. Is this too much root system for such a small plant? What size pot would you recommend? Thanks.

    I would not cut the roots unless you can’t find a pot that can fit them all. Especially since it’s a smaller plant that’s been struggling, you don’t want to risk putting it in too big of a pot where it could be in excess soil and be overwatered, so id stick to a smaller pot that’s no more than 1-2 inches wider in diameter than the WIDTH (not the length) of the plant’s root ball. You could try gently, loosely wrapping some of the roots around the top half of the roots if it’s hard to fit all of the roots in their current length in the pot, but make sure it’s wrapped loosely so the roots aren’t damaged or struggling once repotted. If you do cut the roots, I’d only trim them just enough so they can all fit in the pot, then I’d cover the roots in Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder. It’ll help the plant grow new roots and reduce the risk of shock from being repotted. Even if you don’t cut the roots, I highly recommend you cover it in rooting powder to help your plant recover faster. And make sure you sterilize your shears with hydrogen peroxide before cutting any roots, because you don’t want to run the risk of transferring any bacteria to a plant with freshly cut roots.       Thank you! I put her in a small (not too deep) pot....I didn't have any root powder, so I just cleaned well. No H2O2 in the house at the moment. Do you think I should gather a few more things and pull her out and treat?

      You could, but repotting her again might increase the risk of shock from two repots in the same week, so if you do, I’d get the hydrogen peroxide and rooting powder if you want to repot it again. If you just want to leave it be, you could water it now or wait a day or two for it to settle in the new pot before watering. I like waiting until it’s watering day for a repot since watering soon after seems to help reduce the risk of shock.

      Better to leave her potted so she can acclimate and get back to pushing leaves out sooner
