I inherited these spider plants and am wondering how to handle a repot for them

    I would definitely repot to a bit better of a soil mix and to see the roots. If you want you could try to see if you want to go up or down a pot size but I think I would just help to see the plant you are working with too. A repot might be kinda tricky, you could try potting the plant 1/2 an inch deeper into the soil. I would also make sure the pot is a good size about 1 inch larger than the root ball. Another option is you could clean the roots off and put them in water. This might be good because you can very clearly see the new growth and it will help its unique shape.
