My fairy washboard looks beautiful and has 6 pups now but I noticed this soft brown base on side of the mother and one pup. Is this root rot? Do I need to repot and separate? I really like having them all together so I’m just not sure.

ZackI have the same thing in mine and wasn’t sure what it was when I repotted. I just left it alone and it’s been doing ok. Not 100% sure tho!

I uploaded the photo to chatGPT. Since mine has 6 pups and is localized to the mother and one pup, I need to check the root to make sure it’s not root bound rot. Since the rest of the plant / pups are thriving this seems logical. It also said my soil looks to water retentive (AI is so crazy). So essentially, remove the plant, cut the rot, inspect roots, let callous (1-2 days) and repot in better soil. So that’s what I’m going to do. Hope this helps.

I really don’t think generative AI, especially not ChatGPT which is a writing Ai, is going to give you the answers you need. You’re better served searching Reddit as opposed to asking generative writing AI to make up an answer for you. Or use the Planta doctor AI, which is actually designed for assessing plant issues—but I understand that’s a paid-for feature, which is unfortunate, so if you don’t have that feature Reddit is likely the better bet.

I’ve been consistently using ChatGPT for all of my plants now as I get direct answers. Then some research on the side to confirm. With Reddit or Planta, there are different levels of expertise giving varying answers for what to do. I’ve found the diagnostic tool to not be effective as it also gives a wide variety of what can cause the problem. Which still leaves me to try and figure it out. The experts help but haven’t provided me with much different answers as AI, are less effective and or are not given in a timely manner. All of these other tools aren’t as efficient in problem solving. I understand the thought behind thinking writing AI not being an appropriate source; but the more details the better it gets as well as the stored memory for each plant. AI is just collective information for the internet so it’s saving me more time. The plant is thriving now and it hasn’t failed me yet :)

What’s root bound rot? I’ve never heard of that. Assuming that’s when it’s too root bound??

Google “a plant can develop root rot if it becomes root bound, as tightly packed roots can block drainage holes, leading to excess water accumulation. This creates a favorable environment for root rot to occur.” The plant is doing well as are the pups after following ChatGPT

I respectfully disagree with D.V. I think it’s fine to use chatGPT with reference photos.

It’s helped me figure out how to treat spider mites on very fussy plants that’s dont take well to regular treatment. I also used it to help identify an issue I had with a Zz plant.
